When Oral Becomes Everything

Some nights I do not want the whole performance. I want a mouth that stays, patience that does not clock watch, and pleasure treated as the point.

I used to think that sentence made me sound difficult. It does not. It makes me sound like a woman who has been hurried enough times to know the difference. Most men treat oral like a courtesy. Two minutes, a proud glance up, then the real bit as they see it, which is them. I am thirty one, I supervise a team in the city, and I still go home to Basildon for roast when I can. I am not a mystery. I am just tired of being a warm up act in my own bed.

Let me start where the lie starts. The lie is that everything has to be equal in the same twenty minutes or it does not count. He does something for you, you do something for him, then you meet in the middle like a spreadsheet. I am good at spreadsheets. I do not want one in my lap. Some nights I want to be attended to until my brain goes quiet. I want a mouth that does not treat my body like a stop on the way to his. I want the kind of patience that makes you feel chosen rather than processed.

I can hear my work voice trying to tidy that. The supervisor in me likes fairness. The girl in the hoodie knows fairness is not the same as rush. You can take turns across a life. You do not have to take turns inside one hurried hour like you are splitting a bill.

I have had sweet men. I have had enthusiastic men. I have had men who were so busy performing competence they forgot there was a person attached to the parts they were visiting. Enthusiasm without attention is just wet noise. I would rather a quieter bloke who watches my face than a confident one who has decided in advance what I am supposed to like.

The first time I understood oral as a whole night, not a gesture, I was almost annoyed about it. I had my script ready. Drink, kiss, clothes, the usual sequence, me already braced to be generous because that is the part I know how to do. He kissed me like he had nowhere else to be. Then he stayed at my mouth long enough that I stopped planning the next stage. That is the trick nobody puts on dating profiles. If a man cannot kiss, I already know how he is going to be lower down. If he kisses like he is reading, I get stupidly hopeful.

He took his time on my throat, my chest, the soft place under my ear that makes my knees dishonest. I remember laughing because I did not know where to put my hands. I am supposed to be the girl who can handle herself. I take people home. I am not shy once I am turned on. And still there is this timid bit, this sweet act I do not fully fake, that wants to be looked after and is embarrassed by how much.

When his mouth finally found me I expected the usual pattern. A few polite strokes, a check in that is really a request to move on, then the weight of him. Instead he settled. That is the only word that works. He settled between my thighs like the night had arrived at its actual destination. The first touches were light enough to make me chase them. Not stabbing. Not sandpaper. Warm, wet, unhurried. I felt myself get slick in that heavy way you notice when you shift and there is more of you than there was a minute ago.

I made a sound I would not make in the office kitchen. He did not take it as a finishing pistol. He took it as information.

That is what I mean by oral becoming everything. Not that I have sworn off the rest of sex forever. I like being filled. I like high energy. I like a man who can throw me about when I have asked for that and then put the kettle on after. I am not writing a manifesto against penetration. I am writing about the nights when the hunger is specific. I want to be eaten as if that is the date.

Women know the other version too well. You are half ready. He is proud of showing up at all. His tongue is busy in the wrong place, or too dry, or so fast your clit feels like it is being tapped by someone late for a train. You stare at the ceiling and become a director. A bit left. Softer. It is fine, honestly. You say fine because the alternative is teaching a class you did not enrol him in. Then he comes up for air with the look of a man who has done community service.

I have done that smile. I have said thank you. I have let the night become his because it felt easier than admitting I was still at the starting line.

The body keeps the score in a petty way. You stay turned on and unsatisfied at once. You get that restless heat that does not know where to go. Later you finish the job yourself in the bathroom like a secret, or you lie there buzzing and slightly sad, which is a stupid combination. The next morning you put the supervisor face on and nobody in the bank has any idea you spent part of the night being emotionally polite with your own pleasure.

I do not want to be polite about it anymore.

What I want, when I want this, is simple to say and rare to get. I want him to take the clock off the wall. I want him to hold me open and look, actually look, without making it weird. I want the first contact to be curious. Broad lick, then slower, then that soft circle that is close enough to make me swell and not close enough to finish the thought. I want him to notice when my hips try to help and decide whether to pin them or let me be greedy. I want the wet sounds. I want the embarrassment of being that wet and the relief of a man who likes it.

I want fingers only when they are part of the same sentence as his mouth, not a replacement for effort. I want that slow stretch inside while his tongue stays on me, the two rhythms arguing with each other until I cannot think. I want to come and I want him not to treat the first one like a receipt. The first one is often just the door opening. If he packs up after that, he has misunderstood the house.

There is a particular cruelty, the good kind, in a mouth that stays through the shaking. You get sensitive. You flinch. You say I cannot and your body lifts anyway. A man who knows what he is doing will ease off just enough that the sharpness becomes a throb, then come back as if he has all night, because on these nights he should. I have cried from that. Not sad crying. The overwhelmed kind, heat in the face, that laugh you cannot explain. I have also gone quiet, which startles people who only know the Essex mouth. Sometimes I have no jokes left. Sometimes I am just a pulse.

Friends get the clean version after two drinks. I tell them he was good with his head. I do not always tell them I had to put a hand over my mouth so the neighbours would not get a whole documentary. I do not always tell them I felt looked after in a way that scared me more than the filth did. Being desired is easy to joke about. Being attended to is harder. It pokes the idealistic bit I try to hide under banter. The bit that still wants a tall dark haired man who can ruin me and then stay in the room like I am not a task he completed.

I can want that and still take a stranger home from a wine bar. Those are not opposite girls. They are the same girl on different Fridays.

People assume a high drive means you want everything, constantly, in every order. Mine is picky. Some weeks I want kissing until I am stupid and nothing else. Some weeks I want to be used in the consensual, thrown about way and then have my feet rubbed like an apology that is not an apology. Some weeks, more than I used to admit, I want to lie back and be eaten until the thought of work is impossible. That last one feels greedier because women are trained to give. We are praised for being generous in bed the same way we are praised for being easy at work. Do the extra. Make it nice for them. Do not be the difficult one who needs time.

Time is the whole point.

A mouth that clock watches cannot do this. You can feel the agenda. You can feel him measuring his investment against what he wants next. My body tightens when I sense that. Not in the good way. In the spectator way, the little manager in my head who starts reviewing the performance. Once she is awake, I am gone. I can still go through the motions. I will not fall open. Safety is not a poster on a wall. It is the moment you believe you will not be rushed, mocked, or treated as a delay.

When I believe that, I get wetter. I get louder. I get that sweet dumb smile I would deny at Sunday roast. I hold his hair. I forget to be pretty. I come in waves that do not have tidy names. Sometimes it is sharp and local. Sometimes it is a long roll that makes my legs useless. Sometimes I think I am finished and he licks me like he has only just started and my eyes fill because my nervous system has no other paperwork for that much sensation.

I am not going to pretend every woman wants hours. I am not selling a religion. I am saying that for me, on the nights this essay is about, quality is duration plus attention. Five distracted minutes is not a gift. It is a footnote. If he loves it, I can feel that too. Enthusiasm is a technique. A man who sounds happy down there gives your body permission. A man who sighs like he is doing admin takes permission away.

There was a night I almost talked myself out of asking. We had already kissed in the kitchen. I could have let it become the usual. Instead I heard myself say I want your mouth. I want you to stay there. I sounded braver than I felt. He looked at me like I had given him the best instruction in the city. That look should not be rare. It is.

What followed was slow enough to make me restless, then precise enough to make me swear. He held my thighs. He took breaks that were not exits, just breath against my skin, a kiss to the crease of my hip, a check that was actually a check. Water. A laugh. Then back, messier, greedier, my own wetness on his mouth when he kissed me again. I liked tasting that more than I expected. It made the whole thing ours instead of a service.

I came the first time with my heels in the mattress and my voice gone rude. He did not surface with a winner’s face. He kissed the inside of my knee and asked if I wanted more as if he were offering tea. I said yes because I am not made of stone. The second one was meaner, sweeter, I do not know. Closer to too much. I told him so and I also pulled him back by the hair. Mixed signals, except they were not. They were one signal. Keep going, carefully.

After, I did not feel like I had completed a transaction. I felt wrung out and oddly proud. Proud of asking. Proud of not performing the generous girl who makes sure he is sorted first. He was fine. He is a grown man. He can wait, or we can get there later, or that can be another night. The point of that evening was my body believing it was the point.

I went to work the next day and I was slightly tender when I crossed my legs at my desk. The team got the stern version. Nobody needed the truth, which was that I kept flashing on the weight of his arms over my thighs and the filthy patience of it. That split is my whole life. Bank face. Onesie. Numbers. Appetite. I used to think the appetite made the professional bit less real. It does not. It makes the professional bit a costume I can take off.

If you are waiting for me to say oral is better than everything else forever, I will not. I like a good kiss that turns into more. I like being filled when I am already shaking. I like the high energy nights and the ones that end in a chick flick and silence. I am allowed a menu. This essay is just about the item I was taught to treat as optional.

It is not optional for me. Not on the nights I want it.

I think a lot of women are walking around a bit starved of this and calling it being chilled. We say we do not mind. We say it is fine. We say at least he tried. Trying is not the same as staying. I would rather a man tell me he does not love it than a man who performs a little tour and expects applause. Honesty I can work with. A rush job dressed as generosity makes me feel lonely in a crowded bed.

There is idealism in here, I know. The same idealism that wants foot massages and a kettle and a man who can handle me without turning it into a contest. I keep waiting to grow out of it. I have not. I still believe pleasure gets bigger when it is not squeezed into the gap before his. I still believe a mouth can be an act of character. Careful, curious, a bit filthy, unwilling to be bored of you. That combination has ruined me for the polite version.

I think about this on trains. I think about it in the lift at work when I should be thinking about forecasts. I think about it when I watch some man on rubbish telly act like foreplay is a joke. I talk back to the screen. My friends already know I would. They also know I will go shy if they push me to explain the crying. There is only so much poetry you can put on a group chat. Some things belong in a long piece with a cup of tea gone cold beside you.

If I am blunt, here is the philosophy. Do not clock watch a woman’s pleasure. Do not treat her cunt like a corridor. Do not come up for a medal after a token effort. Kiss her like you mean it. Go down like you mean it. Stay when she shakes. Ask when she goes quiet. Stop when she says stop. Continue when she is pulling you closer and swearing. Hold her after so the filth has somewhere soft to land. That last one matters more than men think. I can come apart and still want to be a person two minutes later.

I am not asking for a performance. That is the joke. The performance is what I am trying to get away from. The practiced porn rhythm, the proud speed, the bit where he is watching himself be good at sex. I want him in the room with me. I want him to like the taste, the smell, the unglamorous wet of a woman who is actually aroused. I want him to be a bit wrecked by the job. I want his jaw aching and my thighs trembling and both of us laughing because it is ridiculous how much a mouth can do when nobody is in a hurry.

Some nights that is the entire plot. No grand sequence. No proving I can take everything. Just patience, heat, attention, and the kind of orgasm that makes you stare at the ceiling like you have been caught. Then water. Then the hoodie. Then the low talk that does not need an audience.

I will keep writing it until I run out of ways to say stay. I will keep asking for it in kitchens, in doorways, against my own shyness. I will keep taking home the ones who kiss me properly and sending the rest home with their dignity and my polite smile. I have only got so many Fridays. I am not spending them being a warm up act.

If that makes me greedy, fine. I am greedy. I like what I like. I like a mouth that stays. I like pleasure treated as the point. I like leaving a night with nothing to finish in the bathroom and nothing to tidy in my chest. That is not a fetish. That is a standard. It took me long enough to say it without flinching.

Put the kettle on after if you can manage it. Hold my legs like they belong to someone you are not finished with. Do not ask me if I am done as if you hope I am. Ask me if I want more as if you hope I do. Some nights I will say I need a minute. Some nights I will pull you back down and be unladylike about it. Both answers are me. The supervisor can wait until Monday.

This is the piece I would hand to a man who said, what do you actually want. Not a lecture. Not a diagram. Just this. Stay at my mouth. Stay lower. Watch my face. Ignore the clock. Treat the wet, shaking, sweary girl in front of you as the whole evening. If you can do that, I will tell my friends you were good and I will mean it in the private way, the way that makes me smile at my phone on the night bus like an idiot.

If you cannot, there are other nights, other bars, other polite thank yous. I am trying to need those less. I am trying to ask sooner. I am trying to let oral be everything when that is what the hunger is. It turns out the hunger was never complicated. It was only quiet. I am done being quiet about a mouth that knows what it is doing, and a man who does not treat my pleasure like the bit before his. That is the whole essay, really. I just needed three thousand words to stop apologising for it.

I’m Dingo, 31, Basildon born, Hackney based, and I still go home for Sunday roast when I can get away with it. By day I supervise a team at a bank in the city, all stern face and sharp edges. Off the clock I’m the opposite, a bit sweary, a bit soft, and far too honest once I’ve had a drink and a story worth telling.
