The Orgasm Hookup Gap

I have left more flats polite than I have left them honest. That is the sentence I did not want to start with, and it is the only one that is true enough to hold the rest. First time sex, the kind you get when you have pulled someone from a bar or a voice note or a look across a wine glass, is often built for him. Not always with malice. Sometimes with hurry. Sometimes with the touching faith that putting it in is the whole trick. I have smiled through that faith. I have said that was lovely. I have got in an Uber with my coat over my dress and my body still switched on, wet and unfinished and quietly furious, and I have edited the night into something I could tell without sounding ungrateful.

I am done with that edit.

If you have stumbled here by accident I am Dingo, thirty one, Basildon born, Hackney based, a banking supervisor by daylight and a woman who still goes home for roast when she can. I am not writing a pamphlet. I am writing about the gap. The one where he breathes out like the story has ended and I am lying there with my pulse between my legs, doing the social work of making him feel skilled. I used to think that was manners. It was not manners. It was a disappearing act I performed with my own pleasure.

People love a statistic until it is about them. I will not dress this up as a lecture. I will only say what women already know and men are forever shocked by. Plenty of first hookups end with him finished and her arranging her face. Penetration on its own is a reliable route for him. For most of us it is a maybe, a warm up, a nice pressure that does not quite land unless something else is happening as well. Clit, time, mouth, attention. The unglamorous list. The list that gets skipped because the night has a pace in his head and I am expected to keep up like I am a good sport.

I have been a good sport. That is the bit that stings.

There was a Friday in a clean little flat that smelled of his aftershave and new laundry. Nice man. Funny enough. Kissed all right until he got excited and then the kissing vanished, which should have been my cue. Clothes off in that half laugh way people do when they are trying not to look hungry. He was hungry. I was too. I remember being ready, properly ready, that slick impatient heat, and thinking this could be good if he stayed with me. He did not stay with me. He went where he wanted to go, found his rhythm, made the sounds men make when they are close, and looked at me as if we had done a project together. I did the smile. I put my hand on his back. I let him kiss my forehead. I used his bathroom and stared at my own face under the cheap light and thought, you coward.

Wet. Polite. Furious.

The fury is not always loud. Sometimes it is just the walk home. Hackney streets at one in the morning, heels in my bag, that ache that is not satisfaction and not quite pain. A body that was asked to open and then left mid sentence. You can tell yourself it was only a hookup so it should not matter. That is a clever lie. Casual does not mean I agree to be a prop. Casual means we both get a night. If only one of us does, it was not casual. It was a service I did not advertise.

I used to fake it because faking is efficient. It ends the scene. It sends him to sleep or to the kitchen or into that soft proud quiet. It keeps you from having the conversation that starts with I did not and ends with him wounded, or sulking, or trying for ninety more seconds with the energy of a man unblocking a sink. I have had that ninety seconds. It is worse than nothing. It is attention as apology, and your body knows the difference.

There is a version of me that finds all this a bit tragic and wants to joke it off. Essex mouth, dry line, next story. My friends have heard the jokes. After two drinks I have given them the plot and kept the feeling. The feeling is this. I like sex. I like it high and messy and close. I like a man who can handle me and still look at my face. I have a drive I hide under hoodies and a work face that could cut glass. None of that means I owe anyone an orgasm performance so he can believe he is exceptional.

The gap is not a mystery of the universe. It is a habit. He has a destination. I have a nervous system. Those are not the same map. If he treats my clit like an optional extra, if he treats oral like a courtesy lick on the way to the main road, if he asks whether I came in the same tone he might use to ask whether I want a lift, he is not a villain from a film. He is just ordinary. Ordinary has wasted a lot of my Fridays.

I think about the men who did not leave me in that gap, because fairness matters even when I am annoyed. There was a good kisser in a dark hallway who seemed to understand that my mouth was not a pit stop. There was a night where a man put his hand between my legs and actually waited, watched, adjusted, like my breathing was information. I came that night before he ever thought about himself and I remember the shock of it, the small stunned laugh, the way my thighs shook and I did not have to decide whether to gift him a sound. That should not feel like luxury. It felt like luxury.

I also think about the ones I protected with my politeness. A suit from a bar who was so pleased with himself I almost admired the confidence. A quiet one who was sweet in the kitchen and rushed in the bed, as if kindness and patience were different men. A handsome one who asked what I liked and then did not use the answer. That last one still gets me. Asking is not the same as listening. Listening is not the same as staying with it when my body is slow, or fast, or suddenly shy.

Shy is part of this and I will not skip it. I can be filthy in my head and timid in the doorway. I can want to be thrown around and still freeze when a stranger’s hand finds the waistband. First time bodies do that. New rooms do that. The gap gets wider when I am busy monitoring how I look, how I sound, whether I am taking too long. Spectatoring, if you want the cold word. I have lain there half in the scene and half above it, watching myself be desirable, which is a terrible way to come and a brilliant way to fake.

Work does not help. All day I am the supervisor. Numbers. Standards. A face that does not wobble. Then I go out as if I can drop that like a coat. Sometimes I cannot. Sometimes I bring the competent woman into the bed and she tries to manage the night, keep it tidy, not ask for too much, not be the difficult one. Men hear difficult when you say I need more. What I mean is I am still here. What I mean is my pleasure has a shape and it is not always his favourite shape.

I am not going to pretend every hookup must end in fireworks or it was an injury. Some nights are clumsy and still kind. Some nights I come easily because I am already halfway there from the looking, the wine, the kiss in the stairwell. The gap I mean is the pattern. The assumption that his ending is the ending. The little collapse of curiosity once he has got there. I have watched it happen in real time. The focus leaves his eyes. His hands get vague. He becomes affectionate in a way that is really relief. I have accepted that affection because I wanted the human bit, the chest, the quiet. I still want that. I also want the first thing finished.

Leaving wet is a specific feeling. You sit in the cab and your knickers are a reminder. You cross your legs and it does nothing. You think about his mouth and whether you should have put it where you needed it. You think about your own voice and why it went small. You open your notes app and write three sentences you will turn into a post months later. You tell yourself you are modern and free and this is fine. Fine is a word I use at work when something is not fine and I cannot be arsed to have the meeting.

I decided I would not fake it again after a night that was not even cruel. That is what makes it stick. Cruel is easy to condemn. This was bland. This was a man doing a version of sex he had learned from hurry and from being told he was good by women who were also tired. I lay there afterwards with his arm across me and I felt the old smile rising and I did not let it. I said I did not come. The silence was brief and awkward and honest. He said oh. He offered. I said not like that, not now, I am too in my head. We drank water. I went home. I did not give him the tidy ending. I walked into my flat and I was still furious, but the fury had somewhere to go. It did not sit in my throat like a swallowed sound.

If you are a woman reading this you may already be nodding in that tired way. You have done the soundtrack. You have done the nails in his back on a schedule. You have said you are just tired. You have gone to the bathroom and finished the job yourself with the tap running, which is a sentence that should not be as common as it is. You have told your friends he was great because great is easier than he was average and I helped him believe otherwise.

If you are a man reading this and feeling defensive, that is also information. I am not saying you are all the same. I am saying the default setting of a first hookup often serves you, and a lot of you have never had to notice. Stay with her. Ask, then do what she said. Do not treat her clit like a rumour. Do not vanish from the kiss the moment you are hard. Do not ask if she came as a victory lap. Look at her. If she is performing, you will feel it if you are paying attention. If she is quiet, it might be pleasure and it might be her going away inside herself. Learn the difference. It is not mystic. It is work, the good kind.

I still pull people. I still like a random night when the air is right. I have not become a nun and I have not become a preacher. I have become pickier about the gap. I will leave. I will say I am not there yet. I will put his hand where it is useful. I will ask for a mouth without wrapping the request in a joke so soft he can ignore it. That feels blunt in my own ears. It also feels like self respect, which is a phrase I used to find embarrassing and now find practical, like taking your own keys.

There is idealism in me and I will not crush it to sound tougher. I want filthy and I want kind. I want a man who can wreck a Friday and still understand that my body is not a corridor. I want the tall dark haired one with patience and humour and a bit of pride that does not depend on me gasping on cue. Until he turns up I will take nights that are honest. Honest can still be casual. Honest is I had a good time and I did not. Honest is stay there. Honest is I need a minute and then I want your mouth. Honest is no, not like that.

I think about my work face in the lift on a Monday after one of those unfinished nights. Blazer on. Stern. Team to run. Nobody in that building needs to know I spent Saturday morning annoyed at a stranger’s sense of timing. That split is my whole life some weeks. Competent woman. Private appetite. The blog is where those two sit at the same table and stop pretending they do not know each other.

The gap shrinks when I stop protecting his idea of the night. It shrinks when I choose men who like the job of attention, not just the prize of access. It shrinks when I remember that coming is not a gift I owe the plot. It is a thing my body does when it is safe enough, interested enough, touched enough, and not watched like a microwave.

I have been asked, in so many words, why I do not just stay home with a toy if I am going to be this fussy. Because I like skin. I like the weight of someone. I like a laugh against my mouth. I like the risk of a stranger becoming a good story. I like men. I just do not like disappearing so they can feel complete.

So this is the policy, if a blog can have a policy. I will not fake it again to keep the peace. I will not confuse his orgasm with the end of mine. I will not get in the car already rewriting the scene into something prettier. If I leave wet and polite I will at least know I was polite on purpose, not because I vanished. Preferably I will not leave like that at all. Preferably he will have stayed. Preferably I will have said the true thing while we were still close enough to do something about it.

I am thirty one and I am late to this particular spine, which would be funny if it were not so ordinary. Plenty of us learn competence before we learn demand. Plenty of us can run a team and still go shy when a man looks at us like we might ask for more. I am asking now. On the page first, because the page is where I am bravest. In the room next, even if my voice goes small. Small and true is still better than lovely and false.

If this reads like anger, good. Anger is useful. It is a heat that says you are still in your body. I would rather be briefly awkward in a bedroom than quietly furious on a night bus with my coat wrapped tight and my smile packed away for later. I have done that bus ride enough. I know every stop. I know the feeling of getting home, showering, standing in the kitchen with the fridge open, not hungry, not finished, telling myself it was fine.

It was not fine. It was the gap.

I write this for the girl who will almost say something and then swallow it because she does not want to be ungrateful for being wanted. Being wanted is not the same as being met. You can be wanted as a destination. You can be wanted as a person. I am trying, finally, to tell the difference in the moment, not on the way home, not in the group chat, not three months later in a long essay with a cup of tea gone cold.

The tea is gone cold now. That feels right. This is not a neat ending. The gap does not close because I named it. It closes one night at a time, when I stay present, when I do not perform the ending, when I let a man see that I am not done and I do not apologise for the extra room I take. If that costs me some hookups, they were not going to be good ones. If it gets me fewer polite mornings and more honest ones, that is the trade I should have made years ago.

I still want the story. I still want the door closing, the laugh, the kiss that thickens, the possibility. I just want my name in it too. Not as the nice girl who made it easy. As the woman who came when her body meant it, or who said she had not, and either way did not lie to keep a stranger comfortable.

That is the whole piece. Not a war on men. Not a vow of specialness. Just a refusal. I will not fake it again. If he can meet me in that refusal, we might have a night worth keeping. If he cannot, I will get my coat, and I will go home unfinished on purpose rather than finished on paper. There is a difference. I can feel it in my own skin. I am learning to trust that feeling more than the smile I was trained to give.

I’m Dingo, 31, Basildon born, Hackney based, and I still go home for Sunday roast when I can get away with it. By day I supervise a team at a bank in the city, all stern face and sharp edges. Off the clock I’m the opposite, a bit sweary, a bit soft, and far too honest once I’ve had a drink and a story worth telling.
