Hoping For One Who Stays

You know that feeling when a night starts with a cheeky grin across a crowded bar in Shoreditch and ends with your legs still wobbly the next morning? Random sparks are proper fun, they are. I will not pretend otherwise. There is something delicious about locking eyes with a stranger whose dark hair falls just right and whose shoulders look broad enough to handle whatever energy you throw at him. One minute you are sharing a laugh over some terrible karaoke in the background, the next you are tumbling through your front door in Hackney with hands everywhere and breath already quick. Those nights remind me I am still very much alive, still capable of that fizzy rush that starts low in the belly and climbs until every inch of skin feels awake.

Yet even while the laughter is still echoing and the sheets are a tangled mess, a quieter voice pipes up. It is the one that wonders what it would be like if the same pair of strong arms was still there when the kettle boiled in the morning. Not just for the high energy part, though that is lovely too, but for the soft bit afterward. The foot rubs. The lazy cuddles where someone traces circles on your back without checking the time. That is the part the random ones rarely stick around for, is it not?

I have had my share of those sparks. One evening last autumn I met a tall chap outside a late night coffee place near the station. He had that dark hair I always notice first, and a smile that made me forget I was meant to be heading straight home after a long shift at the bank. We talked about nothing important for twenty minutes, the sort of chat that feels lighter than air, and somehow ended up walking the long way round to mine. By the time the key was in the lock the air between us felt charged, like the moment before a summer storm. His hands found my waist with a confidence that made my pulse skip. Kisses started soft, almost teasing, then deepened until I could taste the faint mint of his breath and feel the warmth of him pressing closer. Clothes became optional in the best possible way. He had this way of lifting me as if I weighed nothing, spinning me toward the bed with a playful growl that turned my usual shyness into something bolder. The energy was high from the first proper touch. Every brush of his palms across my soft mounds sent little sparks racing, and when his mouth wandered lower to explore the secret garden between my thighs I forgot how to form words. There was only heat, the gentle scrape of stubble, the way my fingers tangled in that dark hair while my body arched without permission. He took his time there, patient and thorough, until the tingly core of me felt ready to unravel completely. Then the pace shifted. He gathered me up and moved with a fierce rhythm that left the headboard tapping a cheeky tune against the wall. I loved being handled like that, tossed and claimed in the most affectionate way, my legs wrapped around him while the world narrowed to the slide of skin and the shared breath. At one point he guided us toward the cheekier path, careful yet bold, and the new stretch of sensation made me bite my lip to keep from laughing out loud at how good the surprise felt. Everything built until the release washed through in waves that left me glowing and loose limbed. Afterward we lay tangled for a short while, his hand resting heavy and warm on my hip. It was perfect in the moment. Then morning arrived and he was already checking his phone, already halfway out the door with a quick kiss and a promise to message that never quite materialised. Classic.

Another time it was a Friday after drinks with the girls. I was in one of my baggy hoodies, hair still in a messy bun from the gym earlier, when a quiet bloke with those same dark locks started chatting about the rubbish reality show playing in the corner of the pub. One thing led to another and suddenly we were back at mine, the hoodie discarded somewhere between the sofa and the bedroom. His kisses were the standout that night. Proper deep ones that made my knees soft before anything else happened. He seemed to understand that a good kiss can set the whole tone, lingering until I was melting against him. Hands wandered with purpose, cupping and stroking until my soft bits felt heavy and eager. When he settled between my legs again the focus was intense, tongue and lips working in a rhythm that had me gripping the sheets and making soft sounds I usually keep private. The high energy kicked in once he rose above me, strong arms bracketing my shoulders while he moved with a steady power that made the mattress protest. I liked the way he could be rough around the edges yet still check in with a look, making sure the fire stayed fun. We explored that cheekier territory once more, slower this time, the new fullness sending fresh sparks through places I had almost forgotten could light up. The whole encounter left me deliciously spent, laughing into his neck at how ridiculous and wonderful it all felt. Yet when the sun came up the same pattern appeared. A stretch, a smile, and then the quiet exit. The affection stayed on the surface, never quite sinking into the overnight stay or the shared breakfast.

I am not complaining, not really. Those nights keep the batteries charged in a way that solo evenings with trash television simply cannot match. There is a special kind of freedom in knowing you can invite someone in, share that electric connection, and wave them off without complications. My friends hear the edited highlights after a glass or two, the bits about the clever mouth or the way strong hands could flip me over without breaking a sweat. We giggle until our sides hurt. Still, the quieter hours afterward always bring the same thought. Would it not be something if the tall dark stranger who can match that fire also wanted to stick around for the soft landing?

Picture it with me for a moment. He would walk through the door after my long day supervising the under twenty fives at the bank, take one look at me in my oldest tracksuit bottoms and bare feet, and still pull me close like I was the best thing he had seen all week. The kisses would start the same way, deep and lingering, the kind that make the rest of the world fade. Hands would roam with that same confident hunger, mapping the athletic lines of me until every nerve hummed. We would tumble into the high energy part without needing to discuss it, the sort of session where the headboard joins in and my laughter mixes with softer gasps. His mouth would find all the sensitive petals again, thorough and playful, drawing out the pleasure until my thighs trembled. When the rhythm built he would handle me with that delicious roughness I crave, lifting and turning until every angle felt new and right. Even the cheekier explorations would feel natural, guided by trust and heat rather than hurry. The release would arrive in those long rolling waves that leave the body singing. And then, instead of reaching for his shirt, he would settle in. Arms around me. Fingers tracing lazy patterns on my back. A proper foot massage while some ridiculous reality show played in the background and we traded sarcastic commentary. Morning would mean coffee shared in companionable silence, or a cheeky second round before the day properly started. Regular. Reliable. The fire matched by the softness that follows.

I know how idealistic that sounds. Modern dating apps and late night bars rarely deliver the full package. Most blokes are brilliant at the spark and then vanish like steam off a hot shower. Perhaps that is why I keep the circle small and the hopes quietly tucked away. Work stays work. The stern supervisor face stays firmly in place around the team. Outside those hours I get to be the version who still believes the right pair of dark eyes and steady hands is out there somewhere between Basildon and East London. Someone who can keep up when the energy runs high and still want the quiet affection once the heat cools. Someone who understands that a girl can love the wild toss about one minute and the gentle foot rub the next without either cancelling the other out.

Until he appears I will keep collecting the sparks. They are too much fun to refuse. Each one teaches me a little more about what lights me up, what makes the soft bits tingle and the heart race in that lovely helpless way. I leave the encounters smiling, a bit wobbly, already half looking forward to the next unexpected connection. Yet every single time the door closes behind a departing stranger the same soft wish floats up. Maybe the next one will stay. Maybe the tall dark handsome type with the clever mouth and the strong arms will decide the morning after is worth lingering for. Cuddles. Foot massages. The whole soft landing after the delicious storm.

I am not in a rush. Life is already full enough with Sunday roasts back home, the occasional evening vape on the balcony, and the endless gentle chaos of managing a team who still think deadlines are optional suggestions. The hope simply sits there in the background, quiet and stubborn, like a favourite song you hum without realising. Random sparks will always have their place. They keep the blood moving and the laughter easy. But the deeper wish remains the same. One day the fire and the softness will arrive in the same package, and that package will decide to unpack and stay a while. Until then I will keep the door open, the kettle ready, and the optimistic little smile tucked into the corner of my mouth. After all, the best stories usually take their time finding the right ending.

I’m Dingo, 31, Basildon born, Hackney based, and I still go home for Sunday roast when I can get away with it. By day I supervise a team at a bank in the city, all stern face and sharp edges. Off the clock I’m the opposite, a bit sweary, a bit soft, and far too honest once I’ve had a drink and a story worth telling.
