Picture this. Me and the girls piled into my Hackney flat last Friday, the kind of evening where the takeaway containers are already empty and someone has put on that ridiculous reality show we all pretend to hate but quote for weeks afterward. Two glasses of wine in for most of us, three for me because the week at the bank had been one of those ones where the under-twenty-fives tested every last bit of my patience, and suddenly the conversation took a turn. You know the turn. The one that starts with a giggle, then a raised eyebrow, then someone saying go on then, spill. And because I am apparently incapable of keeping my mouth shut once the fizz hits, the stories came tumbling out like they always do.
I do not even remember who kicked it off. Probably Sarah, who has never met a secret she could keep past the second round. But there I was, legs tucked under me on the sofa in my favourite baggy hoodie, bare feet tucked against the cushions, and I started telling them about the night that still makes me smile whenever it pops into my head. It was nothing planned. Just one of those random evenings out in town where the music was decent and the air felt charged for no particular reason. I clocked him across the bar first. Tall, dark hair that looked like it would feel soft between fingers, the sort of handsome that makes you forget whatever sensible thought you were having. He caught me looking and that was that. Chemistry does not ask permission. It just arrives, all warm and insistent, and before I knew it we were talking like we had known each other for ages.
The walk back to his place felt longer than it was, mostly because every brush of his hand against mine sent these little sparks dancing up my arm. By the time the door closed behind us the air had changed. His kisses started gentle, the kind that make your stomach flip in the nicest way, then deepened until I was properly lost in them. Good kissers are rare, I told the girls, and this one knew exactly how to take his time. Soft at first, then firmer, like he was learning the shape of my smile. I could taste the faint mint on his breath and feel the steady warmth of his palm settling at the small of my back, guiding without rushing. The whole flat could have burned down and I doubt either of us would have noticed.
Things gathered pace after that. He had this way of moving me around the space, playful and sure, like I weighed nothing at all. One moment I was against the wall, laughing into another kiss, the next we were tumbling toward the bed in a tangle of limbs and half-shed clothes. There is something delicious about being handled with that kind of confident energy. Not rough for the sake of it, just decisive, the sort that makes you feel wanted in every possible corner of yourself. His hands mapped paths across my skin that left trails of heat, lingering in places that made my breath hitch and my thoughts scatter. I remember the way his mouth travelled lower, taking its sweet time, exploring with a patience that had me gripping the sheets and biting back sounds that would have embarrassed me in daylight. The girls were howling by this point, of course, wine nearly spilling, and I could not help laughing too because the memory still felt fizzy and bright.
What surprised me most was how easily the trust settled in. Even in the middle of all that high energy, there was this undercurrent of care. He checked in with little glances, little pauses that asked without words if everything still felt good. And it did. More than good. There were moments where the world narrowed to just the press of skin and the shared rhythm we found, a kind of secret dance that left me floating somewhere between breathless and completely blissed out. We tried things that night I had only ever daydreamed about, the naughtier edges of play that somehow felt safe because of the way he held me through them. The kind of exploration that makes your toes curl and your laugh turn soft and shaky. By the time the intensity peaked I was properly spent in the best possible sense, limbs heavy, cheeks warm, heart doing this giddy little skip that refused to calm down.
Afterwards came the part I always end up talking about longest. The quiet. He pulled me close without any awkwardness, one arm tucked under my neck, the other tracing lazy patterns along my arm while my feet found their way into his lap for an impromptu rub that felt almost better than everything that had come before. Almost. We stayed like that for ages, trading silly comments about the day jobs we had left behind for the evening, the city lights flickering through the curtains. I left before morning with a grin I could not wipe off and a number I never quite got round to texting back. Not because it was bad. Because it was perfect in its fleeting way, and sometimes perfect is best left as a happy memory rather than a complicated next chapter.
Sarah nearly fell off the sofa at that bit. She accused me of holding out on the best details, so of course I had to dig up another one. This time it was the chap from the mutual friend’s birthday drinks a few months earlier. Different energy entirely. Quieter to start with, the sort who listens more than he talks, which somehow made the spark feel even sharper when it finally caught. We ended up back at mine because it was closer, and the moment the key turned in the lock the air went thick with possibility. His kisses were slower, more deliberate, like he wanted to catalogue every soft sound I made. I remember the way his fingers threaded through my hair while his mouth found that sensitive spot just below my ear, sending shivers cascading down my spine in the most unfairly pleasant fashion.
There was laughter involved that night too. Proper belly laughs when we got tangled in my ridiculous oversized onesie that I had forgotten to tidy away. Nothing kills the mood like trying to look seductive while wrestling fleece, yet somehow it only made the heat build faster. Once the fabric was dealt with, the playful side of him came out in full. He had this habit of spinning me round, lifting me like it was the easiest thing in the world, settling me exactly where he wanted while his eyes stayed locked on mine. The mix of strength and softness does something to me every single time. I felt cherished and thoroughly claimed all at once, the kind of combination that makes your inner romantic sit up and take notes even while the rest of you is busy melting into the mattress.
We took our time exploring. His mouth was generous, travelling over every soft curve and sensitive place with a focus that left me restless and glowing. There is a particular magic in that kind of attention, the way it builds layer upon layer until you are trembling on the edge of something bright and overwhelming. When we finally moved together the rhythm felt instinctive, like our bodies had been waiting for the chance to finish the conversation our words had started earlier. High energy did not even cover it. There were moments of pure breathless fun where the headboard might have complained a little and my neighbours probably learned more than they bargained for, followed by stretches of slower, deeper connection that made the whole world shrink to the space between us. The naughtier experiments felt natural with him too, a shared curiosity that never once tipped into discomfort. Just pure, sparkling discovery wrapped in warmth and the occasional cheeky grin.
The aftermath stays with me as clearly as the rest. We ordered ridiculous late-night snacks and ate them in bed, still wrapped around each other, talking about everything and nothing. He gave the most careful foot massage I have ever received, thumbs working out knots I did not even know were there while I drifted in that lovely post-glow haze. I told the girls I almost kept him around for the foot rubs alone. They nearly choked on their wine. But the truth is the whole package was lovely. Fun, intense, affectionate in equal measure. I still smile when I pass the bar where we met. Some memories deserve to stay shiny.
By the time I finished that second tale the bottle was empty and the girls were demanding one more. Fine. The most recent one then, the quiet triumph of a random Thursday that turned into something far more interesting. I had only nipped out for a quick drink after a long shift, nothing fancy, just the local place with the decent playlist. He was already there, dark hair again, tall enough that I had to tip my chin up to meet his eyes, and the conversation flowed so easily it felt suspicious. Chemistry again. That invisible thread that tugs harder the longer you pretend it is not there. We shared a cab more out of practicality than anything, yet the moment the door shut the air shifted. His hand found mine in the dark and the simple contact was enough to set everything humming.
Back at his the kisses started in the hallway and somehow never really stopped. He had this way of pressing close while still giving me space to breathe, a balance that felt both thrilling and strangely considerate. Clothes became optional faster than either of us planned, and then it was all heat and laughter and the lovely slide of skin against skin. He was generous with his mouth in ways that left me arching and sighing, taking his time over every soft place until I was properly restless with need. When the pace picked up it felt like being swept along by something bigger than both of us. Playful manhandling that had me breathless and grinning, the kind of confident movement that makes you feel light and completely wanted. We found rhythms that matched the racing of my pulse, then slowed to something deeper and sweeter that made my heart squeeze in the best way.
There were experiments that night too, little dares whispered between kisses that turned into shared adventures along the naughtier edges of pleasure. Everything stayed wrapped in care and constant soft checks, so the trust never wavered even when the intensity climbed. By the end I was glowing, properly spent, floating in that lovely space where the body feels heavy and the mind feels light. He insisted on the foot massage again, which I am starting to think might be my favourite tradition. We dozed for a while, tangled and warm, before I slipped away with another of those secret smiles that last for days.
The girls were in stitches by then, half scandalised and half impressed, throwing cushions and demanding promises that I would text them the second anything similar happened again. I laughed it off the way I always do. These nights are fun. They remind me I am still capable of spark and spontaneity even after a week of spreadsheets and stern looks at work. They leave me humming with leftover energy and a soft ache that feels more like satisfaction than anything else. Yet even while I was recounting every fizzy detail, there was that quiet little voice at the back of my mind doing its usual thing. The one that wonders when the temporary sparks might settle into something steadier.
I am not in any rush. Single suits me while I wait. I get to keep the stories, the laughter, the lovely memories of being thoroughly and happily spent by people who knew how to match my energy and still offer the soft bits afterward. But I will admit, sitting there with the girls that night, cheeks warm from wine and confession, I caught myself hoping. Hoping for the tall dark handsome someone who can bring all that fire and then some, the kind who stays for the morning foot rubs and the silly conversations and the quiet Sunday plans. Someone who can handle the playful chaos and still make me feel safe enough to be completely soft. Until he turns up I will keep collecting the electric nights and sharing them when the drinks are flowing and the company is right. Because life is too short not to smile about the good ones, and some stories are simply too bright to keep locked away forever.
